Virtual and Non-Virtual Domains

What is the difference between a Virtual and Non-Virtual domain?

A Virtual Domain allows your URL to be http://www.yourcompany.com. The purpose of obtaining a Virtual Domain is to give your site a shorter URL, or Web address. This has many advantages - to give your site the appearance of having its own server, and thus a larger presence on the Web; to make it easier for people to remember your Web location; to allow your URL to fit on a business card; and to attach your company name to its Web name.

More technically, in reserving a Virtual Domain name one is registering with Internic or some other domain name agency. This registration reserves this URL forever (as long as you pay your registration bill, of course). Please refer to  Internic's Web site or one of the other international registration agencies for current policies and procedures.

A Non-Virtual domain is having webspace on a server without your own IP number, and thus without a Virtual Domain name.   Your URL would then be something like http://aainternet.com/yourname.  This includes many of the same features as a Virtual domain, but a loss of the feeling of having one’s own name on the Internet.  A Non-Virtual domain has two advantages: first, it's cheaper; second, you don't have to wait for InterNic registration. All American Internet offers Non-Virtual Domains as a service for people or businesses such as students, smaller consultants, or anyone interested in having access to a server, but no need for a Virtual Domain name.

Do you offer dial-up Internet access?

No.  You will need to gain access to the Internet itself by either a local dial-up access provider or other Internet-connected entity.  By concentrating on Web Hosting, we are specializing in the services that are most important to your site’s success.

Do you offer web page design services?

Yes. You can contact John Monteleone at 702-951-0119 or email  john@aaintenet.com.

How to I get the pages I’ve created to All American Internet?

There are many methods available, but the most common are via FTP,  or by actually creating them on the server with a text editor via telnet.

Will I be able to update my pages at any time?

You have unlimited access to your site via FTP, or telnet in order to make whatever changes may be necessary.

What can I use my web site for?

You may use your site for whatever you wish as long as it is in compliance with our Acceptable Use policy.

Can I resell space within my virtual domain?

What you do with your site is, again, up to you as long as you are within the Acceptable Use policy, but the overall responsibility for the site is yours.

What is the service agreement term and what are the payment options?

We bill quarterly. You may also choose to bill semi-anually, or yearly if you wish.  We accept all major charge cards, personal or business checks, or international wires, transfers, or checks drawn on affiliated US banks in US$ only.  The customer is responsible for any and all fees incurred using this method.

How long does it take to setup a new account?

We are generally able to setup a new account within 24-48 hours, Monday through Friday.  The only time that this is usually exceeded is if there are special circumstances, such as an invalid or reserved user name, but even those situations can usually be resolved quickly.

Your Domain Name

Is the WWW part of my domain name?

It is very important to realize that the portion yourcompany is the Domain Name. Not www.yourcompany.com. The www. is a commonly called a machine name; it just happens to be the most common machine name prefix on the Web!  Since we are primarily a Web Hosting company, we do setup your account so that yourcompany.com and www.yourcompany.com are equivalent.

How do I know if the domain name I want is available?

There is a simple form that will query Internic’s database and let you know.  Remember that this is only for the Top Level domains of .com, .org, .net.  All others should be checked with their respective registration authorities.

Does All American Internet perform domain registration?

We ask you to do this, rather than AAI, primarily because it is easier for you to retain control over your domain for the future.   You can fill out Internic’s online form to register your new domain name.  You will be billed separately by Internic for this service.  You can then list us as only the Technical Contact, which is sufficient.  The information you’ll need from us is:

Our NIC Handle:  AD4-ORG
Primary Server Hostname:  NS1.GENUITY.NET
Primary Server Netaddress:  207.240.5.60
Secondary Server Hostname:  NS2.GENUITY.NET
Secondary Server Netaddress:  207.240.5.61

What is the Internic fee and how do I pay for it?

It can change, but is currently $70 and is invoiced directly to you by Internic.

Does All American Internet  accept international orders?

All American Internet has customers from around the world hosting domains from many countries.  As long as there are no special DNS requirements for the country concerned, we can have you up and running in the same manner as .com, .org, and .net domains.

Can I transfer an existing domain to All American Internet?

Certainly.  The method we normally suggest for this is to activate your account here at All American Internet, get your site ready here, and then modify your domain’s information at Internic.   You use the same form that you may have used when creating the domain name, just performing the “Modify” portion.  The same infomation, like our NIC handle, would apply.

Will I be able to use my new domain right away?

When we setup your account, we automatically generate an email to you that has some basic information about services, programs and such.  Upon receipt of this mail, you will be able begin uploading and configuring your site.  Your site will be accessible via  its IP number, such as http://207.240.127.152.  The registration service that you apply through (Internic most of the time) would then be the determining factor, with turn-around times as low as a few hours in some cases, but usually no more than a day or two before you can access your site at http://yourcompany.com

Can more than one domain name refer to the same HTML files?

Yes.  We refer to this a parked domain.  The parked domain would point to exactly the same HTML files as the primary domain since they share the same IP number.  The parked domain cannot point directly to a subdirectory of the primary domain.  It is possible to make users refer to subdirectories and have mail be received at the parked domain, but some of the “virtualness” is lost and this process is more technical than can be discussed here.
