General FAQ

How can I get my files to my new site?

You can use many different methods, but the most common for Windows 95/NT is to use any standard FTP client and Microsoft FrontPage.  FTP freeware and shareware can be found at http://www.shareware.com and Frontpage can be purchased at most local software stores.  Mac users can use Fetch.  Unix die-hards can use standard command-line FTP.

What FTP server name do I use to access my site?

We set your DNS information up so that ftp.yourcompany.com, www.yourcompany.com, and yourcompany.com are all equivalent, so any of these will do.  You may also use the IP number you have been assigned, but there are occassions where the IP number for your site may change, so this is not suggested.  (This sort of change is normally transparent to any users of your site, so don’t worry.)

Please look here for further illustration.

What is the SMTP/POP3 username and server for my email software?

SMTP is simply for outgoing mail. This can either be set to your dial-up provider's SMTP or mail.yoursite.com. For Pop3 however, please use the following information: Pop3 Servername: mail.yoursite.com - Pop3 username: yourusername - And finally your users password.

Please look here for further illustration.

How do I get my home page to load automatically?

In order for this to happen, you would utilize what is referred to as a default document, so that when someone puts http://www.yourcompany.com into a browser, your home page would appear.  In Unix, it must have ‘index’ for the first part, with multiple extensions possible, e.g., index.htm, index.html, index.cgi.  On the NT side, you must use index.htm.  Others are possible, but not active by default - check with us on this.

What if I am denied access via FTP, Frontpage, POP3, or telnet?

Please verify that you are using the proper username and password.  Also, you may need to verify that your software is configured properly.  If the problem persists, please contact Technical Support.

What if I am denied access via browser?

You may be using an incorrect URL or may have named the page you are trying to access differently.  Also, you may be viewing a page from your browser’s memory or disk cache.  Please refer to your browser’s documentation for how to clear the cache.

What directory and file naming conventions can I use?

Most anything is acceptable, but it is not suggested that you use anything with spaces or special characters such as $, %, &, or # in it.  Unix is case-sensitive, so FILE.html and file.html are not the same.  Also for Unix, cgi-bin is a reserved system-wide directory name, but cgibin is acceptable.  In the same vein for NT, scripts is a reserved system wide directory name, but cgi-bin is acceptable.

How can I find out my usage statistics?

On Unix, they can be seen at http://yourdomain.com/logs/mk_output.  On NT, they are at http://yourdomain.com/stats. If these are not visible for your site, please email support@aainternet.com.The stats are generated once every 24 hours.

Can I have access to the raw log files?

On Unix, they are are in your logs directory at yourdomain.log, which is all information up until last night.  You may also see others that are compressed and represent previous months - these may be deleted.  On NT, they are not currently available since they are stored on a seperate system.

Can All American Internet perform file restorations from backup?

Although it is possible, we prefer not to and highly recommend that you keep your own off-site backups.  The backups that we keep are intended to guard against a catastrophic loss of data caused by equipment failure.  If you wish for us to restore data for you, there will be a minimum of a $150 charge.  We would also need to know what files or directories to restore.  This can be requested through normal support channels.  Cave Creek makes no guarantee of data integrity or timeliness.

When will my domain name be active?

All American Internet has your domain ready within 24-48 hours.  However, it may take longer for users to see your domain.  Once you have performed the setup with the appropriate name registry, your domain may be accesible within a day or two, and almost always within a week.  This is due to DNS propagation - how long it takes other DNS servers on the Internet to “notice” that the name is registered or changed.
